Back in the day, the way USC's film-

school was structured, you would start out the program making four super-8 films using silent film techniques with music and simple effects only.  It was not sync, and you played your sound on a cassette player next to the projector.  Those are the first year projects.


Second year, you would make a 16mm black and white film, with no dialogue but with sync music and effects.


Third year, you could (if the faculty chose your script) make a 16mm color film with sync sound and dialogue.
